Distichiasis refers to misplaced eyelashes that grow towards the corneal surface. Trichiasis refers to normal hair that ends up growing towards the eye and touches the corneal surface. Ectopic cilia refers to hair that grows from the conjunctiva or the inner surface of the eyelid margin, straight towards the cornea. Certain breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs, and Poodles are more prone to these conditions. At first these misdirected hairs will cause squinting, tearing, and inflammation, with later sequelae being corneal ulceration, infection and pigmentation.
